New Delhi is the capital of India and located in the area commonly known as Delhi with a population of over 11 million. Delhi is also the business center in northern India and a healthcare center of excellence.

India is quickly becoming one of the world’s leading travel destinations. India is one of the world’s most diverse countries with a population in excess of one billion and the seventh largest geographical area. India offers travelers a wide range of experiences as one would imagine from a country that extends from the Indian Ocean in the south to the Himalayan mountain range in the north.

India has undergone rapid economic development beginning in the early 1990s. Since 2000, India has been the world’s second fastest growing economy with an average growth rate in excess of 9% per year. India’s 2005 Gross Domestic Product of $787 billion ranks 3rd in the world. Some of India’s largest industries include textiles, chemicals, food processing, steel, transportation equipment and petroleum. In addition, India is becoming the world’s leading provider of business process outsourcing and a major base for US technology companies, including Microsoft, Google and IBM.

India’s healthcare infrastructure has been in place since the British colonial period. Until the early-1990s’, India’s healthcare was primarily concentrated in the public sector. The development of the private healthcare sector paralleled overall economic development beginning in the 1990’s and has rapidly expanded since 2000. There are currently over 200 private medical centers in India.

New Delhi

New Delhi is the seat of the government of India and located in the area commonly known as Delhi. The greater Delhi area has a population of over 11 million. In addition to being the capital of India, Delhi is the economic capital of northern India. Delhi is vibrant and modern and a leader in India’s rapidly developing service economy. Delhi’s leading service sector industries are information technology, telecommunications, hotels, banking, media and tourism. Delhi has one of the highest living standards in India.

Delhi is located in the northwest part of India approximately 28 degrees north of the equator. The average daily temperature ranges from 60 degrees (15C) in the winter to 88 degrees (30C) in the summer. The cost of living is favorable: food is reasonably priced, hotels are generally priced at about 75% of comparable US levels and it is very inexpensive to travel by taxi. There are approximately 20 official languages spoken in India and Delhi and, perhaps because of this diversity, English is widely spoken in most professional and service-oriented environments. Delhi is a unique combination of modernity with traditional, time-tested ways of Indian life.

Three of India’s leading private medical centers in Delhi participate in Medical Tourism International’s network.
