Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre (EHIRC) is located in New Delhi, the capital of India. Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre is a 325-bed tertiary care heart institute that was opened in 1988.
Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre, New Delhi is the main heart institute in the Escorts Group, which operates 12 heart institutes throughout India. EHIRC contains 9 operating theaters, 5 Cath labs and 2 Heart Command Centres. EHIRC is widely regarded as one of the leading heart institutes in the Asia Pacific region performing on average over 3,250 heart bypass operations and 9,000 angiographies per annum. EHIRC is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic and laboratory equipment. Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre has been providing service to international patients since 1988.
Dr.
Naresh Trehan is the Executive Director and Chief Cadiothoracic and Vasuclar
Surgeon of Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre. From 1971 to
1988, Dr. Trehan held important academic and clinical positions at the
New York University Medical Center, Bellevue Hospital of the City of
New York, and Veterans Administration Hospital (Manhattan). His pioneering
work in the field of coronary artery bypass surgery was at the New York
University Medical Center, where he performed over 3000 coronary artery
operations. In 198, at the height of his career, he returned to India
and started Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre - a pioneering
state-of-the-art heart institute in India. This institute is among the
best in the world in cardiac care having successfully performed over
35,000 open heart surgeries.
Robotic
Heart Surgery. Cardiac Surgeons at Escorts Heart Institute perform
totally endoscopic coronary artery bypass (T-CAB) using computer assisted
robotic technology. T-CAB is performed without opening the chest. The
surgeon sits at a console, peering into the chest with 3-dimension vision.
On the robotic console, the surgeon's hand motions are captured, transformed
and then transmitted to micro-instruments inside the chest cavity to perform
complicated cardiac procedures. The control is so perfect that cardiac
surgeons are able to construct an anastomosis in the customary fashion.
Using this technique, there are 3-incisions, each only 1 cm in diameter
on the side and lower part of chest instead of a long incision in the front
of the chest. A smaller incision results in less pain, faster healing and
recovery and a shorter hospital stay.

Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre uses the advanced SPECT gamma
camera imaging system to provide doctors with sectional images of the
heart. This computerized imaging system reconstructs the images into
complex cardiac data in 3-D and
4-D domains for accurate and functional identification of cardiac diseases.
ESCORTS HEART INSTITUTE AND RESEARCH CENTRE'S SPECIALTY MEDICAL SERVICES INCLUDE:
Cardiac Surgery. With more than 3,500 operations each year, this is one of the busiest cardiac surgical programs in Asia. Major areas of cardiac surgery at EHIRC include the following: Bypass surgery (CABG), including OPCAB, MIDCAB; Valve surgery; Laser surgery; Surgery through small cuts (MIDCAB, Heart-port surgery for valves, ASD closure), Vascular surgery (both Carotid and Aneurysm) and Robotic surgery.
In addition to performing conventional adult and pediatric surgery, EHIRC's Cardiac Surgeons regularly perform advanced and innovative techniques. Some of the advanced technical procedures available at Escorts heart Institute and Research Centre include the following: Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery. This technique involves operating upon the coronary artery through a small 3-4 inch incision on the side of the chest. It encourages rapid recovery and leaves behind a very small scar. Valve surgery is also performed through this technique. Port Access Surgery. Commonly referred to as the "Key Hole Surgery", it is used for Valve replacement, CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Graft) and some congenital heart defects. Total Arterial Revascularization in CABG to provide long-term patency of graft. Surgery on the Beating Heart without the use of heart-lung machine. Transmyocardial Laser Revascularization(TMLR)
EHIRC's cardiac surgery is performed in six state-of-the-art operating theatres managed by a team of highly trained surgeons and anesthesiologists. These operating theatres are supported by six intensive care units providing critical care and constant monitoring for the post-operative patients. Escorts Heart Institute follows a well-laid out "Progressive Patient Care System", wherein the patient moves from one level of critical care to another depending upon the level of care required.
Interventional Cardiology deals with identifying and clearing the blockages in coronary blood vessels. This involves acquiring knowledge about the blockage through an invasive diagnostic procedure called Angiography and removing it through interventional procedures of Angioplasty or Stenting.
Three high-resolution Cardiac Catheterization labs are operational at EHIRC performing a full range of invasive procedures. These invasive procedures include the following: Coronary, Carotid and Renal Angiography, Coronary and Peripheral Angiography, Stenting, Balloon Mitral, Aortic and Pulmonary Valvuloplasty and Rotational and Directional Antherectomy (Rotablator). This institute is among the few in Asia to have the facility of evaluating coronary arteries by Angiography and Intravascular Ultrasound.
