Dr.
Naresh Trehan is the Executive Director and Chief Cadiothoracic and Vasuclar
Surgeon of Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre. From 1971 to
1988, Dr. Trehan held important academic and clinical positions at the
New York University Medical Center, Bellevue Hospital of the City of
New York, and Veterans Administration Hospital (Manhattan). His pioneering
work in the field of coronary artery bypass surgery was at the New York
University Medical Center, where he performed over 3000 coronary artery
operations. In 198, at the height of his career, he returned to India
and started Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre - a pioneering
state-of-the-art heart institute in India. This institute is among the
best in the world in cardiac care having successfully performed over
35,000 open heart surgeries.
Dr. Trehan is a Diplomate American Board of Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery. He was appointed as Personal Surgeon to the President of India in 1991. Besides
clinical work he has taken keen interest in training, education and research
programs and has presented a number of scientific papers and chaired scientific
sessions in national and international conferences in USA, UK, Japan, China, Israel
and throughout Asia.
Robotic
Heart Surgery. Cardiac Surgeons at Escorts Heart Institute perform
totally endoscopic coronary artery bypass (T-CAB) using computer assisted
robotic technology. T-CAB is performed without opening the chest. The
surgeon sits at a console, peering into the chest with 3-dimension vision.
On the robotic console, the surgeon's hand motions are captured, transformed
and then transmitted to micro-instruments inside the chest cavity to perform
complicated cardiac procedures. The control is so perfect that cardiac
surgeons are able to construct an anastomosis in the customary fashion.
Using this technique, there are 3-incisions, each only 1 cm in diameter
on the side and lower part of chest instead of a long incision in the front
of the chest. A smaller incision results in less pain, faster healing and
recovery and a shorter hospital stay.
Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre uses the advanced SPECT gamma
camera imaging system to provide doctors with sectional images of the
heart. This computerized imaging system reconstructs the images into
complex cardiac data in 3-D and
4-D domains for accurate and functional identification of cardiac diseases.

Cardiac Surgery. With more than 3,500 operations each year, this is one of the busiest cardiac surgical programs in Asia. In addition to performing conventional adult and pediatric surgery, EHIRC's Cardiac Surgeons regularly perform advanced and innovative techniques. Some of the advanced technical procedures available at Escorts heart Institute and Research Centre include the following: Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery. This technique involves operating upon the coronary artery through a small 3-4 inch incision on the side of the chest. It encourages rapid recovery and leaves behind a very small scar. EHIRC's cardiac surgery is performed in six state-of-the-art operating theatres managed by a team of highly trained surgeons and anesthesiologists.
