Bariatric or Weight Loss Surgeries are done to assist the severely obese in the achievement and maintenance of weight loss. The most common procedures are Gastric Banding or Gastric Bypass. Both approaches reduce the size of the stomach by dividing it into 2 small pouches. This reduces stomach capacity and enables the patient to feel satisfied sooner. |
Gastric Banding reduces the capacity of the stomach by using a band, ring and/or staples. These devices divide it into 2 small pouches. There are many approaches to Gastric Banding. It is frequently done laparoscopically. |
Gastric Bypass reduces the capacity of the stomach by partitioning the stomach. The larger, lower side of the stomach is bypassed. Food enters a smaller pouch to which the small intestine has been directly attached. Food quickly passes through this small pouch and enters the small intestine. There are many approaches to Gastric Bypass. It is frequently done laparoscopically. |
Laparoscopic Cholesystectomy (sometimes referred to as Keyhole Cholecystectomy) is the surgical removal of the gall bladder using laparoscopic technology. It is performed most commonly to treat gall stones. |
