A hysterectomy is the removal of the uterus. The most common type of hysterectomy is a complete or total hysterectomy during which the uterus and cervix are removed. In a Radical Hysterectomy, the uterus, cervix, upper part of the vagina and supporting tissues are removed. The procedure, depending on its scope and purpose, can be done abdominally, vaginally or laparoscopically. It may be part of the treatment for uncontrolled bleeding, fibroids, endometriosis, uterine prolapse, and cancers of the cervix, uterus, or ovaries. |
