Procedure Description

Knee Arthroplasty or Knee Replacement

Knee Arthroplasty, or Knee Replacement, is the replacement of the knee joint with a prosthesis. The inner or outer portion of the knee can be replaced (Partial Knee Replacement) or the entire knee joint can be replaced (Total Knee Replacement). This is usually a procedure of last resort for patients suffering chronic pain due to injury, arthritis, or tumors.

To accommodate the prosthetic, the knee cap is removed, the patella resurfaced, and the distal femur and proximal tibia are reshaped. The prosthesis is implanted, using medical bone cement or specialized chemicals that encourage bone growth.

Hip Replacement

Hip Replacement is a procedure of last resort when hip resurfacing has failed or is not a viable option. In Total Hip Replacement Surgery an artificial plastic hip cup is inserted into the patient’s eroded hip cup. The worn femoral head is removed and replaced with a metal ball. The ball’s shaft is anchored into the femur using medical bone cement or specialized chemicals that encourage bone growth.

Hip Resurfacing

Hip Resurfacing is much less invasive alternative to Total Hip Replacement. A Partial or Total Hip Resurfacing can be done depending on the condition of the joint. This technique maintains the future possibility of Total Hip Replacement.

In Hip Resurfacing, the damaged area of the hip joint is cleaned, and the femoral head is shaved and re-shaped to accept a metal cap with small guide stem. In Partial Hip Resurfacing the femoral shell is implanted over the femoral head. In Total Hip Resurfacing, both ball and socket are implanted in their respecitve sites.

Spinal Fusion

Spinal Fusion fuses together two or more of the vertebrae using bone grafts and metal rods. This eliminates any movement between the vertebrae segments. While this removes some flexibility, it is a means of minimizing specific back pain or stopping the progress of a spinal deformity.
